American Lung Association meets BBB Wise Giving Alliance Standards

Volunteer

"In every community there is work to be done. In every nation, there are wounds to heal. In every heart, there is the power to do it."
—Marianne Williams

The American Lung Association of Connecticut is the oldest voluntary health agency in the United States. Since 1904, we have relied on volunteers for every aspect of our mission, which is to prevent lung disease and promote lung health. Our focus consists of three key areas: asthma, tobacco control and environmental health. Through education, research, and advocacy, we are working to fight big tobacco, bad air and the asthma epidemic. Anyone can be a volunteer. It just takes a willingness to exercise your skills for a good cause. ALAC volunteers work with staff members to fight lung disease and improve the lives of people throughout Connecticut. Ready to help? Listed here are just a few of the opportunities available.

Special Events
Volunteers are needed to serve on committees for various special events. Committee members help plan all aspects of the event, such as solicitation of auction items, menu and site plans, theme and decorations, sponsorship and ticket sales.  Committees meet monthly for one hour approximately six months prior to the event and, just prior to the event, more frequently. The total hour commitment per event is approximately 20 hours. Meetings are held in our East Hartford office and include dinner and dessert. If you are interested in volunteering for one of our upcoming events, contact Lisa Wrubleski, Director of Development, at 1-800-LUNG-USA (in CT) or (860) 289-5401 ext. 228.

Flu Hotline (October through December)
The American Lung Association of Connecticut needs volunteers to help answer calls on the Flu Hotline during the months of October through December. Your time for one morning or afternoon per week would be greatly appreciated.  The Flu Hotline will operate from our East Hartford office at 45 Ash Street from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. Two shifts are available each day - from 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and from 12:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Volunteers answer our special telephone line to give information on locations for receiving flu and pneumonia shots. Training will be provided.  For further information, contact Pam Nixon, Manager, Health Promotion, at 1-800-LUNG USA (in CT) or (860) 289-5401 ext 238.

Board of Directors
Members of ALAC's Board of Directors are elected from volunteer committee members. The amount of involvement varies. For more information, contact our office at 1-800-LUNG USA (in CT) or (860) 289-5401.

Legislative Network
Volunteers are needed to contact elected officials on state and federal issues involving lung health, smoking, indoor and outdoor air quality to encourage wise legislative decisions about the lung health of Connecticut’s residents. Contact may take place by phone, fax, mail, or in person. We’ll provide you with instruction and timely information on key issues.
We're also looking for someone to spend about six hours a week, January to June, to help organize and direct the public policy campaign. Please contact Margaret LaCroix, Vice President, Communications, at 1-800-LUNG USA (in CT) or (860) 289-5401 ext. 230.

General Office Work
We have opportunities for general office work including assembling mailings, telephone coverage and data entry. Please contact Cathie Arnold, Vice President, Finance and Operations, at 1-800-LUNG USA (in CT) or (860) 289-5401 ext. 227.
