Landmark Clean Car Legislation Approved by 2006 Connecticut General Assembly:
The new legislation features a Clean Cars Consumer Education Program, which will highlight the link between motor vehicle emissions and global warming through a comprehensive motor vehicle labeling program that enables purchasers to compare the global warming impacts of various makes and models on a dealer’s lot. This program will be the second such program in the nation to mandate that greenhouse information be displayed on all motor vehicles sold in the state.
The public is increasingly concerned about global warming and the negative environmental impacts of vehicles, but their understanding of these issues is still limited. Consumer education is a key component to making progress in reducing greenhouse gas emissions. SB 660, the Clean Cars Bill, will help educate consumers about the impact of greenhouse gas emissions from motor vehicles and help them understand the connection between climate impacts and their new car purchases. Passage of the Clean Cars bill places Connecticut at the forefront of developing policy initiatives to address global warming, and demonstrates the state’s ongoing commitment to reducing carbon pollution in order to protect the health of its citizens and avert the serious consequences of global warming.
