Freedom from Smoking

Freedom From Smoking® Group Clinic Program

If you've tried to quit smoking before and still smoke, don't "beat up" on yourself. Like any change in lifestyle, quitting smoking takes practice.

Recognizing that tobacco can be more addicting than heroin for some and that it can take multiple attempts for many before a final quit is reached, the American Lung Association developed the Freedom From Smoking® clinic program which places special emphasis on long term maintenance. The emphasis has helped thousands of smokers across America quit and stay quit using the support of this eight-session program.

This group program is led by experts who understand why you smoke. The program uses a positive behavior-change approach in developing your own quitting plan, dealing with recovery symptoms, controlling weight, managing stress through relaxation techniques that work, and being ready to fight those urges to go back to smoking. For many smokers—especially those who have tried to quit before—group support can make the difference in helping to stay smoke free. To register for a program in your area, please contact the person listed below.

To learn more about the Freedom From Smoking® program or to schedule a clinic for your organization, please contact Ann Ottalagana by email or by telephone at 413-737-3506. Or you can participate in the American Lung Association's new online program. Register for Freedom From Smoking® online today!

In addition, you may contact the Connecticut QuitLine, which provides information, telephone counseling, and referral to local treatment programs. Call toll-free at 1-866-END-HABIT (1-866-363-4224).

Freedom From Smoking Facilitator Training
Health professionals, educators, and others are eligible to be trained as Freedom From Smoking facilitators. Training includes: nuts and bolts of the clinic, facts and figures on smoking, how to manage a group and more. Once trained, facilitators are able to conduct a Freedom From Smoking clinic at their place of work or on a freelance basis through the American Lung Association. Trainings will be held at various locations throughout the year.
